How to fix the “Adwords Editor Stopped Working” -issue?

This is for those of you seeking advice on an upgrade issue with AdWords Editor. If you have Windows 7 and have recently upgraded your AdWords Editor and you get  a message “AdWords Editor has stopped working” I hope this helps you.

The problem usually is in that SQLite has made an update to a data file which Google uses in AdWords editor. Google however has not incorporated the updated file into the AdWords Editor download package yet. The second reason might be that you are having compatibility issues with your system. Here’s what you should try out before reading all the detailed data around the issue:

SQL error in Google Adwords Editor Update

  1. Go to SQLite Download Page and download the SQL Lite library under “Precompiled Binaries for Windows”.
  2. After the dowload extract the files and copy the file “sqlite3.dll”.
  3. Then go to folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Google AdWords Editor\xulrunner\on your computer and replace the old “sqlite3.dll” -file with the one you just copied. Try out the Adwords Editor and see if it worked or not.

NOTE: For me this worked fine with the old copyof Adwords Editor but if you don’t want to take any risks with your computer and have a bit more of time you might want to uninstall it and all the data related to AdWords editor and install a fresh copy before replacing the sqlite-file.  The uninstall instructions are here in Google Adwords Editor Help.

Compatibility issues with Windows 7 and Adwords Editor

  1. Go to “Start” -> “All Programs” -> “Google” -> “AdWords Editor”  but do not open the program.
  2. Click on the right mouse button and choose “Properties”.
  3. Choose “Compatibility” and select “Run this program in compatibility mode”. First try SP3 and if it doesn’t help you might trySP2 also. After the selection choose “Apply” and try out the Adwords Editor.

Although some people have gone back to SP1 with the compatibility, I would not recommend this as you might lose some functionality with the Adwords Editor. But if it is the only way to get it working I suppose there’s not much more to do? Let’s all hope that Google Adwords Editor technical staff will be able to solve this problem soon. In the meanwhile thanks to Virante Marketing for the SQL-tip. Any comments on how you solved this or not are of course appreciated!
